Brand it a group project!

And so on a snowy night in Dec a grouping of about ten of u.s. got together to learn nearly and make our very own cord art projects.  And since this night took place before Christmas, we made reindeer heads and snowflake string art projects (hither'south mine).  It was quite the night…10 gals with hammers made for quite a noisy time…merely information technology was super fun.  And let me tell you, from that night on I was hooked!  Hooked.  I discovered that not but exercise I adore the look of string art, but I really, really savor the process of making them likewise, information technology'southward quite relaxing.  Aside from all of the initial hammering of course (simply absolutely hammering is quite therapeutic hahaha)!

Subsequently having completed a couple string fine art projects I thought I would share some tips and tricks I've learned along the way!  String  art is much easier than yous might think.  It just takes some time and patience!  You can practise it.

Tools for String Art projects:

  • Nails: I use 1 inch nails, but you lot can use whatsoever size you lot similar depending on how many times you wish to wrap your cord. I prefer to utilize white nails (they are panel nails) because I like the way they expect with the white string.  Merely once more, this is just personal preference.
  • String: I use crochet thread (archetype size 10), and I purchase big rolls of them, they're about $5 at Michaels.  Again, cull any colour you like.  And buy more than string than you call back you might need…there's nothing worse than running out half way through your project.
  • Woods Board Blazon:  Yous can employ solid wood, plywood or particle board. The most important thing is choosing a wood that is thick plenty to hold the nails securely without having the nails come up through the back of the forest console.  Make certain it information technology at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
  • Wood Board Size: The size of your board depends on how big the design is that you choose.  For example, for this one I hand drew the pattern onto a piece of 8×10 paper, and used a 10.v ten 12.5 board.  You can stain the woods lath in any color you wish.  Just make sure to exit plenty time for the board to dry out before y'all begin your string project.
  • Hammer
  • Pattern: Come across beneath

  • Images like hearts, anchors and stars are slap-up starter projects.  Just google 'cord art patterns' and tonnes of ideas will come up, including many gratuitous patterns you can download and print.
  • Once you've washed one string fine art project you lot'll see how easy they are and you lot'll presently discover that you tin make a string art project out of well-nigh whatever picture.

Tips and Tricks for making your string art projects:

  • Spacing between nails:  I have found the ideal spacing between the nails is about 1 cm (or a trivial less than ane/ii inch).
  • Pattern:  If possible, accept 2 sheets of your blueprint ready:  one to tape onto the board, and 1 to use as a guide to refer to when stringing.
  • Tape your pattern onto your prepared board, and hammer the nails into each dot (see picture #2 in the above epitome).
  • Pliers:  Use a pair of small needle nose pliers to hold the nails while you hammer them.  Yous can use your fingers if information technology'southward easier, just sometimes I find the pliers to be very helpful because you can get them into tight spaces. Hold the nail with the pliers, and then beginning past gently tapping the nail into the woods, and in one case it'south into the wood board, use a bit more than strength to embed it.
  • Be careful non to hammer too deep. Y'all don't want to hammer through the lath, just only into it…almost half way works.
  • Remove the design: Once the nails are all hammered in, I remove the paper at this bespeak because it'southward very difficult to remove later the thread has been strung.  This is where your second pattern to follow comes in handy.  This part can be a bit frustrating considering you'll find little pieces of paper stuck nether the nails.  Yous can employ your pliers to pull it out.
  • When starting your project tie the cord onto a smash, securing it with a knot, and work out from in that location (run across picture #3 in the above image).
  • I like to outline my piece first with string, and so piece of work towards the within (see picture #4 in the above image).
  • To thread the string, merely take your thread and make one wind around each blast equally you get.
  • In that location are unlike ways to approach stringing the inside of your art slice.  You can exist very methodical and string the thread in a design, or yous can do information technology like me and string the thread around randomly (see pic #v in the to a higher place epitome).
  • Don't pull the string too tight as you become or your nails will start to lean in and may pop out.  Just pull the thread snug, merely non difficult. And go along your hammer handy in instance you need to whack whatever wobbly nails dorsum into identify.
  • Once I have the inside filled out with cord the way I want, I like to go back and outline the edges with the string again just to define it nicely.
  • Tie a knot in the cord when you are finished (run into picture #6 in the to a higher place image), and snip the ends then constrict them within the string art so you can't come across them.

So what do you call up?  Are yous ready to endeavor a string art project of your own?  If you lot've ever thought almost making i of these, yous really should endeavour.  I call up you lot'll be surprised at how like shooting fish in a barrel and enjoyable they are to brand.  I'thousand making another one next weekend considering I. Can't. Stop. Stringing. 🙂
